The Magpies

Ki Ora Bloggers ✋

Lately I have been working on a task about The Magpies. The Magpies is quite an old story based around these two people called Tom & Elizabeth and Magpies. Underneath this writing there is a table full of the original poem, then underneath that in the same table there is my summary about the poem. So if you want to go and check it out 😊

Dennis Glover: ‘The Magpies’

When Tom and Elizabeth took the farm

The bracken made their bed

and Quardle oodle ardle wardle doodle

The magpies said

Tom’s hand was strong to the plough

and Elizabeth’s lips were red

and Quardle oodle ardle wardle doodle

The magpies said

Year in year out they worked

while the pines grew overhead

and Quardle oodle ardle wardle doodle

The magpies said

But all the beautiful crops soon went

to the mortgage man instead

The magpies said

Elizabeth is dead now (it’s long ago)

Old Tom’s gone light in the head

and Quardle oodle ardle wardle doodle

The magpies said

The farm’s still there. Mortgage corporations

couldn’t give it away

Begin Summary here:

When Elizabeth and Tom took the farm, the shrubbery made their bed. Elizabeth’s lips were red and Tom’s hand was strong to the plough. Year in year out they both worked while the pines grew overhead. All the beautiful crops soon went to the mortgage man. Elizabeth is sadly dead now, and old Tom has gone light in the head. The farm is luckily still there as the Mortgage corporations couldn’t give it away.

Cardinals

Hey everyone ✋I hope you are having a great day. Today for my blog post I have created my mascot bird in English. It will be explaining why I choose this bird to be my mascot. We have been working on this in English for about a week and I think my one is finished. So why don't you have a look:

Cardinals:

1. What bird did I choose?
- I choose a Cardinal bird

2. What does the bird look like?

3. Why did I choose this bird?
- I chose this bird because it represents a loved one that you've lost. I've lost a loved one in my life and I've seen this bird flying over me or around me all the time after. It gives me the feeling that my love one is watching over me and seeing how I'm doing. I also chose this bird because it gets me closer to my family and helps me take responsibility. I'm very grateful for how long this bird has stuck with me and helped me get through the hard times.

4. What country/countries are Cardinals most found in?
- Cardinals are mostly found in Northern America. There is a slight chance that cardinals can be found in NZ, Christchurch but it is possible.

5. What are Cardinals afraid of?
- Owls, Hawks, Place decoys that look like predatory birds and Osprey (a large fish-eating bird) decoys make them think they will become food.

6. Are Cardinals smart?
- Yes. Cardinals are one of the smartest birds in the world.

Here Is What A Beautiful Cardinal Sounds Like:

I really hoped you enjoyed and learn't a bit about why I chose this bird. Quick Question: Do you think this bird is beautiful? I definitely do! Anyway I hoped you enjoyed and hope you have a fantastic day 😊

Summarising - One of the FAB FOUR for improving literacy

Accelerated Learning in Literacy Term 3

Our class in Year 9 are looking at four main skills we will be looking at this term to improve our
literacy.  The Fab Four skills are:

Predicting
Questioning
Clarifying
Summarising

A skill that students use to improve their literacy is to be able to summarise what they see, read,
hear, view or watch.

At the start of the term, our teacher Mr McCartney got us to write about our holidays under the
heading BMEPMI - which is an acronym for beginning, middle and end, positives, minuses and
interesting.

B M E P N I

Beginning:
The beginning of the holidays was amazing as I got to turn off my phone alarm
(which normally goes off around 6-6:30). I get to stay up late and sleep in.
I get to hang out with my friends that I don’t normally see a lot.
I get to go shopping/go out places without a time limit. I get to spend a lot more time
with the horses, rather than just 1 hour feeding and doing the chores. I get to take
Vinny (one of my horses) out to a pony club camp or just a random outing. I get to go to shows
with the horses or out to the forest.

Middle:
In the middle of the holidays I was at Pony Club camping with Vinny having the time of my life.
I was still doing lots of activities. One of my favorite activities was going to adrenaline forest.
I used to be a rock-climber so I love to be high and doing things that challenge me. I challenge
myself to go to the top level (which was 30 metres high). I got a bit scared as the trees were
shaking and the obstacles were pretty hard, but I pushed through it so I could go on this amazing
zip-line that goes across the whole forest and over the water with this amazing view at the end
of the course. I really enjoyed adrenaline forest and I’m hoping I can go back there soon and
challenge myself again.

End:
At the end of the holidays I was quite sad as I will be going back into doing chores and not
being able to have that much fun with my animals etc. But I was quite excited to start school
again and get back into a routine. At the end of the holidays I was making the most of going out
and being with my friends and family. (Also trying to get as many late nights and sleep in’s as
possible). 😂

Positive:
The most positive part of my holidays was going to see a part of my family that I haven’t seen in
ages. We had a sleepover out at their new house in Rolleston. I got to see my 2 cousins and my
new little baby cousin for the first time. He is one of the biggest babies I’ve ever seen! But he
was definitely cute and had a great personality. My other 2 cousins were mostly grown up now
(as I haven’t seen them in awhile). They started school and are going really well. Luckily Olivia
(one of my cousins) was still into horses so she is going to come down to the paddock to ride
next weekend so I get to see them again!

Negative:
There was barely anything negative about my holidays, but sadly my bunnies escaped.
My bunnies are inside bunnies (so they sleep inside) but I put them out during the day.
(My bunnies are more wild hares than bunnies). So basically I was taking my second bunnies
out as the first one was already out and I put her in the bunny run that they have outside,
but apparently she didn’t want to go in the run today and she jumped out as I was shutting the
roof! She decided that she wanted to go for a run and I was devastated. But the best thing
happened! She decided she liked her food too much and she came back! I was so happy! But
from now on I know to be way more careful.

Interesting:
The most interesting thing about my holidays for me was going to adrenaline forest and making
it to the top level and seeing possums running on the zipline behind me! I was so scared that it
was going to jump on me or attack me, but luckily it was a nice possum and went down the tree at
the other end of the zip-line. Actually it was a very nice possum as it waited on the zip-line wire
why I clipped onto my next obstacle then it went down the tree faster than a lightning bolt.
